In this episode of The Hirewell Update, we dig into the job market’s current identity crisis: strong job reports followed by surprise layoffs, full pipelines stalled by indecision, and candidates stuck in interview purgatory.
Caution is the Name of the Game
The energy right now isn’t broken. It’s cautious. Really cautious.
Across corporate functions and go-to-market roles, hiring decisions are crawling. Final rounds stretch for weeks. Contract roles (yes, contract) are taking as long to close as full-time hires. One step forward, two weeks of silence.
Companies are holding out for clarity—on budgets, on interest rates, on what the heck is going on with the economy. But while they hesitate, top talent moves on.
What We’re Seeing
- Interview whiplash: Long processes, slow feedback, ghosting even at final stages.
- Temp-to-perm spike: Especially in corporate roles. But hiring velocity isn’t matching the flexibility.
- Candidates in limbo: People want to work. They’re interviewing. They’re waiting. And they’re frustrated.
Employers: Your Slow Play Is Costing You
If you find someone great, don’t drag your feet. The best candidates, yes, even now, are not sticking around. Hiring hesitancy kills momentum and damages your brand. Transparent communication matters more than ever.
Candidates: Play It Smart
Focus on momentum. Ask the hard questions early:
- Is this role funded?
- What’s the decision timeline?
- How critical is this hire?
If it feels like a slow burn from the start, it probably is.
So… Is the Market Broken?
We’ve been asked this a lot. Our answer: No.
But it’s slower. More complex. And way more sensitive to uncertainty than it’s been in years.
We’re still cautiously optimistic. Things are moving. Just not in straight lines.
If you’re a job seeker confused by mixed signals, or a hiring manager unsure how to move forward—reach out. We live in this market every day. Let’s make it make sense together.

Candidate Experience sucks right now. That’s it. That’s the show.
If you think back to 2021, when the job market was on fire, it was top of mind for everyone. Not just LinkedIn think pieces, but companies poured lots of time and effort into white-glove interview processes.
Now that the market cooled off, so did the effort. But there’s a disconnect: attracting talent isn’t any easier right now. In fact, it’s harder when you inadvertently cut corners.
