How I Transitioned from One Career to Another

This post is specifically geared towards #transitioningteachers. I have been getting a lot of messages from teachers about how I made my career change, so I figured it may be helpful to just make a post about it.

I know the school year is right around the corner, so If you are still in a position where you are headed back to school but want to leave the classroom in a year, now is a perfect time to start preparing. One thing that I felt was helpful is a course I took called Teacher Career Coach by Daphne Gomez. This course walks you through networking, rewriting cover letters/resumes, interviewing etc. I like this course because it is split up by modules, so you can pick and choose exactly what it is that you want/need to focus on. It also opens up the doors to a whole community of transitioning teachers that are in the exact position you are in.

Next, find out what skills you are good at and how you can apply those to a different career. I love talking and meeting new people, therefore, decided #recruitng would be a perfect fit for my personality and skillset (so far is has been the best decision I have ever made). Once I knew what I wanted to pursue, I did my research on the career and started following and learning from professionals that were successful doing it.

Lastly, my biggest piece of advice is to start making connections with people on LinkedIn. I truly do not think that simply applying to a bunch of places is the route to go. Unfortunately, a lot of companies (not all) see teachers on resumes and automatically count us out. Find the companies that you could see yourself working for. Connect and ask people from those companies for advice and how to get your foot in the door. I talked to several recruiters from all types of companies before I decided which company I wanted to grow with.
